LARS ULRICH: 'I'm Probably The World's Biggest METALLICA Fan'
September 9, 2008Arwa Haider of London's Metro paper conducted an interview with METALLICA at last month's Kerrang! Awards.
"I think we're still kids at heart," drummer Lars Ulrich said. "I'm probably the world's biggest METALLICA fan, so I have to make sure that what we do fires me up. I'm the protector."
METALLICA's ninth studio album, "Death Magnetic", sounds like an exhilarating show of force, and the band's fan base is exceptionally multi-generational.
"People feel a kinship with METALLICA because we've been around longer than God's dog, as you say in England," explained Ulrich.
"A lot of music styles become passing fashions. Metal has timelessness. Many of the bands that inspire kids nowadays — LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE — are the same bands that we grew up on."
Bassist Rob Trujillo, a seasoned player who became METALLICA's newest member in 2003 (replacing Jason Newsted),is amused by the suggestion that METALLICA have mellowed with age. "I'm more active and focused than I was 20 years ago," said Trujillo. "With age, sometimes you become more fine-tuned — performance goes along with that. This band works hard — when you've got [James] Hetfield screaming in your face, you can't be the weakest link."
